It is SO fitting that I got to interview and feature one of my favorite podcasts, titled Almost 30, the week of my 30th birthday. Talk about synchronicity, am I right?
Almost 30 is a podcast hosted by Lindsey Simcik, a SoulCycle Instructor, an actress – see Mistresses on ABC, as well as being a singer and model, and Krista Williams, creator of the Hundred Blog. Oh yeah and did I mention they were on
The Thirty’s “7 Wellness Podcasts We Can’t Stop Listening To” and THEY ARE ON TRACK to hit a million downloads by the end of the year.
One million. You saw that right.
Why do listeners love their show? Well, it is mainly a health and wellness podcast where they talk about life transitions between their 20’s and 30’s.
Some of my FAVORITE episodes include: 1) EPISODE 73: HOW CURVY SONGSTRESS ISABELLE BREAKS THE MUSIC INDUSTRY MOLD THROUGH BODY POSITIVITY 2) EPISODE 49: CELEB HEALTH COACH MARIA MARLOWE ON THE DO’S + DON’TS OF EATING FOR CLEAR SKIN + A HEALTHY LIFE and 3) EPISODE 40: CURVE MODEL + CEO OF MODEL MEALS DANIKA BRYSHA ON HER BATTLE WITH FOOD + HOW IT TRANSFORMED HER LIFE
So of course I jumped at the opportunity to ask them some fun questions and grab some great tips from them. Grab a booch and check it out!
Q: For those who don’t know, what is the Almost 30 podcast?
Krista:The Almost 30 Podcast is as REAL as it gets. We talk about spirituality, health and wellness, sex, dating, career, body image…nothing is off limits. We started on the premise that there needed to be more support and information for women as they transition from their 20’s to their 30’s, and that idea of helping women through transitions has grown to be so much more. A community, and place for people to find resources they need to grow into the people they want to be.
Q: How was the Almost 30 podcast created?
Lindsey: It was born out of our daily conversations about life, and more specifically about our experiences transitioning from our 20’s to our 30’s. We had NO idea how to start a podcast, but the pull to create something for other people experiencing transitions was much stronger than our doubts about our abilities to get it done. So we sat on our closet floors for six months and recorded episodes that still have not reached the itunes airwaves. For us, it was practice, it was energetically saying yes to this big project and allowing the ideas to flow through us without intense judgement. We bring on experts, guru’s, authors, you name it, to help us navigate
Q: Honestly, podcasting sounds like SO MUCH FUN. What do you love about podcasting?
Krista: That it’s not about how I look, HA. I love that when people connect with Lindsey and I on the podcast, they are TRULY connecting with US as PEOPLE. Nothing more. This is who I am, this is what I love, and these people are INCREDIBLE that we have on. I also really value the ability to speak to some of the best and brightest in the game.
Lindsey: I love A LOT about this crazy ride. I love learning from our guests. I love when they give me pause. I love working with Krista, having a partner is so key. I love connecting with our community on the daily, hearing from them that an episode changed their life or that they feel like we are their new best friends. WE ARE FRIENDS, WE LOVE YOU! Ugh, it just fills us up.
Q: What are some challenges in the podcasting world?
Krista: It is SO MUCH WORK. I spend almost every hour of the day (or what it feels like) doing something for the podcast. Editing, promoting, recording, scheduling, growing the community. It’s not for the faint of heart or those that aren’t passionate. I’ve learned really how dedicated I am to its success and the growth of this tribe we have. Also, we’ve learned a lot about owning a business, making money, pitching to investors…everyday I learn something new.
Lindsey: There will always be growing pains. Our exponential growth has made those growing pains especially sharp at times. But honestly, having a partner like Krista, give me the super power of perspective and grounded-ness in any tough situation. The toughest part is making sure the wheels stay on and super tight as this podcast train keeps speeding along. We keep each other accountable and focused. Our community supports and grounds us. We are learning that if we build this space from an authentic place and realize our flaws and commit to transparency throughout the process, we are able to attract the most amazing angels that help guide us to our next level.
Q: EEK! So with that being said, what kind of advice do you have for those wanting to start their own podcast.
Krista: So many babes were asking us about this, so we created this guide for babes here. Just because there is SO MUCH to learn and do. I would say, just be super clear on what you want to say, and what is the message you want to share with the world. Also, to be SUPER AUTHENTIC, be YOURSELF. Don’t mimic anyone else, YOU make the difference in what the podcast is, your personality, your humor, your insight…
Also, be positive man. No one wants to hear any negativity in their ears all day, and if they do it’s not a community you want to cultivate. Last, be prepared for lots of work, and make sure to market as much as possible so people can hear and connect with you!
Lindsey: JUST START. Record episodes on the voice recorder on your phone. Maybe it’s practice and maybe they will never be released. But this space between A and B is so valuable and SO FUN. So enjoy it!!
Q: Where do you both get your inspiration from when planning out topics of discussion for the podcast?
Lindsey: Our listeners are such a key part of our evolution. We want to talk about what they want to talk about! We often times ask our listeners for guest and topic suggestions and they come through big time!! Krista and I also draw on what we are dealing with in our own lives, whether it is health, relationship, or business related, we want to discuss and figure it out in real time with real experts!
Q: I love that! Curated to your audience. If you could pick anyone. Who would be your dream guest?
Krista: Rich Roll, Barack Obama, because – DUH.
Lindsey: MERYL STREEP.
Q: It really resonated with me in your bio talks about you both being sisters in a past life. How cool y’all feel that deeply connected. Can you elaborate?
Krista: That makes me so happy, truly. It’s true! We met at the PERFECT time in our lives, ready and willing to dedicate ourselves to something greater. Right when I met Lindsey I knew that she was the missing puzzle piece to making my dreams come true, and I do feel like you can have people that you’ve met in previous lives. Whether it’s a friend relationship or romantic relationship, finding those people and holding those relationships super close to your heart is really important. Our friendship and mutual respect for one another, has allowed us to ‘birth’ this beautiful amazing thing that we are in love with. We’re so grateful.
Lindsey: This is not our first time on earth. I truly believe we knew each other in another life. We connected deeply right away. We truly “see” each other. Krista is so inquisitive, and in a way that makes you feel seen, heard, and supported. Everyone will thrive if they take in her energy. I feel very lucky that I’m able to collaborate with another human so easily. It’s totally a gift.
Q: I am in awe of that connection. Where do you see Almost 30 in the future?
Krista: Oh MAN! The future feel so bright. Really fueled by the community we’ve grown and the listeners that really fee passionately about the honesty, the growth, and supporting one another, we feel like the sky is the limit. We have a few events coming up in October and November that we’re pumped about, we’re attending events in 2018 for Almost 30 and we keep getting on amazing guests. So, we’d love to just continue on our path, by doing more.
Lindsey: Reaching tens of millions of people all over the world. We see Almost 30 as a media platform that will encourage people to be themselves and confidently create the life they want through our podcast, events, our creative house, our podcast and social media consulting, and through our community outreach. Almost 30 is much more than a podcast. We are so excited for you all to grow with us!
Q: And finally this wouldn’t be a BRING YOUR OWN KOMBUCHA interview if I did ask this. Kombucha of choice, go!
Lindsey: I love the new Health-ade flavor “Power Greens”!!
Krista: G.T.s Trilogy ALL THE WAY!
