Hi guys! It’s FRIDAY! A new podcast episode is live, find it here. In this episode I interviewed my sorority sister, Kara Hoholik, and we chatted all about sustainable fashion! She has a few tips for y’all that she shares below. I also want to mention, if you listen to her podcast episode and want to purchase from her ethical, fashion brand Sseko, you can shop this link here.

If the idea of sustainable or socially conscious fashion overwhelms you, there are just 5 quick things you need to know right now to get started.
1. Start in your closet. A sustainable wardrobe doesn’t begin at the store – it begins in your closet! Maybe that’s not as sexy as shopping, but it’s convenient and simple to just wear what you already have.
2. Thrift shopping. Second hand is the best way to buy things that are new to you while also conserving resources (including your money!) and taking the environment and waste issues into consideration. Brands that are not socially conscious get bumped up a notch or two when they are given new life in your home as opposed to going in the trash.
3. Find your values. What matters most to you? Living a vegan lifestyle, affordability, or companies that pay employees a fair wage? One of the hard parts about being conscious about your fashion choices is just that – there are a lot of choices! Once you narrow down some top values that mean the most to you, it becomes easier to choose a few go-to brands.
4. One at a time. Don’t let the big words “sustainability” or “socially conscious” scare you into inaction. Just do this one step at a time. Need new running shoes? Find info on your current brand – maybe they’re already doing amazing things – or research for a new one. Need new bras? Same process. You don’t have to throw out your whole closet and start over.
5. Choose 3 brands. You don’t have to go hog wild and research for hours and overwhelm yourself. Pick just a few go-to brands – maybe one for basics, one for dress/work, and one for accessories/shoes. And just simply shop there when you need something and forget about the rest until you feel more comfortable.
Remember that the most ethical items you can wear are the ones you already own. So take a deep breath and take it one step, and one day at a time. Getting overwhelmed is the surest way to halt any progress you’ve made, which will not help garment workers or our environment. But you don’t have to go through this process alone!! Let me send you a free closet inventory (link: http://bit.ly/closetinventory) and a step-by-step mini e-course to give you the support and encouragement to get started.
