I chatted with 5 nutritionists and asked them what their protein bar go to is. Here is what they said:
- Chanel Gold Kenner, nutritionist and dietician student, recommends Primal Kitchen Collagen Bars, specifically the Macadamia Sea Salt flavor. ” Primal Kitchen is a great brand because they use real and simple ingredients. One bar has 15g of grass-fed collagen protein. Collagen protein is made up of glycine, proline, hydroxyproline, and arginine, which are amino acids that help our body’s connective tissue, skin, hair, and nails. Of course, you want to mix and match proteins, so there isn’t one type of protein that is “best,” but collagen is a really good option to include in your diet. I also like that Primal Kitchen bars are low-sugar. While I don’t subscribe to a “paleo” ideology, the use of honey as a natural sweetener is very appealing, because keeping added sugars to a minimum is important in a healthy diet.”
- Nutritionist Chantelly Jean Liebling, picked Perfect Bars (which are also my favorite!). She said, “I’m not sure if it was how I was raised or if I just never really got into the taste of them, but I have never been interested in eating protein bars to get my daily protein in. Protein bars are loaded with so many unnecessary ingredients and added sugars that they typically aren’t even good for you. This also goes for many protein powders. When I think of protein, I think of the real good, clean stuff like some raw mixed nuts, nut butters, lean meats, beans, yogurt, cheese, collagen peptides, eggs, etc. These are the foods I typically reach for when I know my body is in need of some high quality protein. Another option we have really grown to love are Perfect Bars. Perfect Bars are definitely one of the better options to reach for because they are made with clean ingredients and various superfoods. These are great when you’re busy and need that healthy snack to hold you over. Plus, you’re getting your healthy fats in so you don’t have to worry too much about the amount of sugars in them. The fat will keep your blood sugar balanced and give you the energy your body needs to power through the next couple of hours.
- Danielle Prestejohn, who has a Master of Science in Applied Nutrition advised, “My favorite bar is an RX bar because I love that it’s all whole food ingredients but still has the balance of protein from egg whites!”
- Megan Kober, my favorite vodka drinking nutritionist, chose Bulletproof bars. “I love these bars because they won’t spike your blood sugar at all. They’re full of brain-friendly fats to keep you focused, fiber to keep you full, and protein to keep your metabolism revved up. The ingredients are squeaky clean and they actually taste good, too!”
– Kimberly Bender, health and wellness advocate + nutritionist, also chose the primal kitchen collagen bar or rx bar.
