I’ve gone totally JERSEY SHORE on y’all and went spray tanning for the first time EVER! #TshirtTime HAHA!
Don’t worry, it was an all organic + natural ingredient based spray tan so I actually don’t feel an ounce of guilt about it. I’m all about embracing a balance and incorporating HEALTHIER + NONTOXIC options into your everyday life, not so much depriving myself.
Since it was my first time spray tanning, I literally had NO idea where to start so I’m going to do the whole run down for you.
I also want to note that the spray tan was 100 % PREGNANCY safe. That was my first question when I made the appointment and Susan, the owner, even advised the day of the appointment that she called the company to ensure the product was safe. I of course did my own research and came to the same conclusion.
Exfoliation + Pretanning
Susan of Susan Baatz Massage + Facial Studio, (by the way this is NOT sponsored), advised me to exfoliate prior to coming in for the tan. She also advised that I stay away from any oils or lotions and to of course remove all my makeup.
For my face, I used my favorite exfoliator by BEAUTY COUNTER. I choose beauty counter because of their transparency + advocacy for nontoxic beauty. They have a ton of initiatives including heading to Congress to fight for more BANS on chemicals. Have you ever heard of a beauty company who actually wanted ingredients banned? I haven’t until now. That’s a company I can stand behind.
For my body, I used Lotus Soap Shop body scrub. Lotus Soap Shop is also a natural ingredients based product. They just launched their “minis” for $5 and I AM OBSESSED. You can buy a variety of scents and they make the perfect gift.
I love the results I get after using both of these products and when I asked Susan if my body was exfoliated enough while she was spraying me, she said my skin was literally perfect. So I’ll be use to continue to use both of these products again when I go back. Scroll down to become part of my beauty counter party and get your own facial exfoliator!
Organic Botanical Spray Tan
As I previously mentioned, I went to Susan Baatz Massage + Facial Studio and the product she used was called Bronze BioLogic. The product itself does not contain any harmful or toxic chemicals, dyes, alcohol, additives, perfumes, or artificial colors. When she called the company as to inquire about whether it was safe for women who are pregnant, the company explained the product is derived from beet root juice and a few other natural ingredients.
Ingredients include Purified water, DHA, Cane Sugar, Aloe Vera, Sorbic Acid+ Benzoic Acid. The company actually broke down the ingredients in a little bit of detail for you below.
“Purified Water: Water that has been filtered down to a specific micron (particle) size and 99% of all minerals, chemicals, chlorine, sediment, and elements has been removed.
Dihydroxyacetone: (DHA) is a FDA approved simple carbohydrate compound that is derived from plant sources such as beet sugar and causes a natural tanning of the skin when applied at the right concentration.
Saccharum Officinarum: The botanical name for cane sugar. When processed correctly at specific temperatures and concentrations, this ingredient creates a natural, safe bronzing effect to the skin.
Whole Leaf Aloe Vera (Barbadensis): Bronze Biologic solutions and skin formulas contain a unique 200:1 Whole Leaf Aloe Vera extract that contains active nutrients, phyto-nutrients, vitamins, and minerals for optimal skin health.
Sodium Benzoate (Benzoic Acid): A naturally occurring compound with antimicrobial properties, and is found naturally in cranberries, prunes, greengage plums, cinnamon, ripe cloves and apples.
Potassium Sorbate (Sorbic Acid): Derived from the oil of the unripened rowan berry (sorbapple or mountain ash berry) and is used to safely prevent bacteria and mold growth. via Bronze Biologic“
One week later
I wish I took pictures and when I go back for my second tan (because duh I’m obsessed), I will definitely update this post with pictures. However, the majority my tan stayed on for about 9 days. It has faded gracefully and unnoticeably.
Other Tanning Options
Aside from this tanning option, my friend Johanna over at The Soulful One ended up getting a spray tan the very same week as me. She uses another organic and nontoxic tanning option and I wanted her to give us a glimpse of her experience since there are SO MANY better for you options out there!
“Hi, my name is Johanna and I am from and I wanted to share with you my experience on getting a tanning treatment over at Chocolate Sun which is an all organic and non-toxic tanning company located in Santa Monica, CA. I have come to love this company for the past year in a half now and I feel amazing knowing I am getting the glow I want and still being safe about it. What I loved about this experience was that the technician who helped me was very detailed about everything from start to finish. The technician let me know that Chocolate Sun is Vegan, FDA approved, Eco-certified and of course cruelty-free. One of the things I love about Chocolate Sun is what they put in the bottle, they are made with such wholesome ingredients such as organic cocoa, vanilla extract, shea butter, DHA from sugar beets and aloe vera just to name a few. They are also free of mineral oils, dyes, lanolin, paba, parabens, alcohol, petro chemicals, lauryl Sulfate and formaldehyde. To me, knowing my tanning treatment is safe for my skin is so important because who wants toxic chemicals going into your pores!? Not me! The technician had made me a custom blend based on what I was looking for and then applied the tanning solution by hand while using a mister to get me all bronzed up and the whole process took about 35 minutes. I came out of the treatment smelling like cocoa and shea butter versus that typical strong chemical scent so that was an added bonus. So far, It has been a whole week and my glow is still fresh like if I had done it yesterday and my skin feels so moisturized. I definitely recommend to go towards an organic plant based spray tan versus the traditional tanning salon. You may spend a little more, but your body and health will thank you for it.”
If you want to purchase your own The Chocolate Sun, head over to their website and use the promo code soulfulone15. I also did a post on The Chocolate Sun awhile back and chatted about their nontoxic ingredients if you want to check it out.
