After seeing (what it seems like) thousands of Instagram posts and videos on bulletproof coffee recipes, I finally tried it out myself. And here is what I have to say about it….
For those of you that don’t know, bulletproof coffee is an upgraded cup of joe. The benefits of this particular morning cup are suppose to be endless! For starters, it accelerates fat loss (WINNING!), helps you stay in ketosis, boosts brain power and increases mental clarity (who doesn’t need that in the morning?!), promotes muscle gain AND boots your energy levels. ARE YOU SOLD YET?
This “biohack” drink typically contains 1 cup bulletproof coffee, 1-2 tbsp of bulletproof brain octane, and 1-2 tbsp ghee all mixed in a blender. The texture of the coffee ends up being super frothy!
The bullet proof coffee beans are expensive BUT important. I attempted to try other brands of coffee with this combination and it just didn’t taste right. (Believe me I did not want to get stuck in another expensive coffee habit, we have all had our starbucks or dunkin obsessed days right?). So I gave in and purchased their brand of coffee – which my Shoprite currently carries.
Bulletproof explains the importance of using their brand of coffee as such: “The fact is that the vast majority of beans available for roasting are contaminated with biogenic amines or damaging compounds created by naturally occurring molds in green coffee production that are linked to all sorts of health problems like cardiomyopathy, cancer, hypertension, and brain damage. Mycotoxins grow on coffee beans before the beans are even roasted. So although the damage is caused before the roasting process even begins, most people tend to focus on the roasting method because that’s what’s easier. This is why Bulletproof uses a specially designed Bulletproof process to make our beans….but the beans are also engineered throughout the entire creation process to mitigate the dozens of ways mycotoxins and chemicals typically enter the coffee supply chain, and we use laboratory grade testing to verify the results.”
So even though your choice of coffee is “organic” or “fresh roasted” – that doesn’t necessarily mean it doesn’t contain the mycotoxins and chemicals that bulletproof aims to eliminate.
The brain octane is a MCT (medium chain triglyceride) that helps you lose weight, kickstart your brain, and curb your appetite. Per the Bulletproof website, brain octaine “raises fat-burning, brain-fueling molecules in your body called ketones.” Personally, I notice a HUGE difference when I add brain octane to my coffee. I am able to focus as soon as I get to work and I feel so much more alert.
Ghee is also added into the coffee, which creates the frothy texture to it. Ghee contains vitamins D, E, and K and it is an anti-inflammatory fat that keeps your “gut lining and metabolism in good shape.” I use the brand Fourth and Heart.
I also add Vital Proteins collagen peptides to the coffee, which I’ve seen ALOT of other bloggers do as well. (Read my article on collagen .) Collagen is beneficial for your skin, hair, nails, bones and joints. And since I am quickly approaching 30, I so badly want to make sure my skin is in check (yep, totally scared to age and to start getting those wrinkles!)
But I digress…so here we have the bulletproof coffee, brain octane, some grass fed ghee, vital proteins…and we blend it all together… and I just don’t LOVE the taste. We aren’t finished yet folks….
After doing some research, I found a couple of additions I can add to the coffee without compromising the integrity or the positive health affects of the concoction. You can add some Maca, Cacoa butter or Cacoa powder, Cinnamon, COCONUT CREAM, or stevia.
It is recommended that you avoid adding regular cream, milk, nut milk, sugar, or honey. Per the bulletproof blog, these additions wreck the affects of the biohack coffee. “Each of these foods changes insulin response, stops autophagy, or causes inflammation. These physiological/biochemical changes in your body lead to a foggy brain, hunger, and fat gain.”
Try it out for a solid week and I guarantee you will feel a positive difference. Focus on how it makes you feel, instead of how sweet it tastes and whether it compares to your Starbucks latte. It is all about making your body feel good.
Let me know what you all think! Until next time, sip sip and Booch on! xx Erica

Make your coffee. Brew 1 cup (8-12 ounces) of coffee using filtered water with 2 ½ heaping tablespoons of freshly ground Bulletproof Coffee Beans. Use a French Press for ease of use and to preserve beneficial coffee oils that paper filters keep out.
Add Brain Octane Oil. Add 1 teaspoon to 2 tablespoons of Brain Octane Oil (start slow with this stuff – it’s powerful!)
Add grass-fed butter or ghee. Add 1-2 tablespoons of grass-fed, unsalted butter or grass-fed ghee. Make sure your butter is unsalted. Salty coffee is gross.
Blend. Mix it all in a blender for 20-30 seconds until it looks like a creamy latte. There will be a good amount of foam on top.
*Don’t forget to add your preference of additives. Remember its not about the taste but about how your body reacts to it 🙂
