While this blog started out with making sure we were switching over to a more nontoxic lifestyle, it has quickly evolved into also trying to make more eco-friendly shifts. Which with a baby, is SO HARD. We are always on the go and trying to figure out hacks to make life easier and that does not always equate to making things eco-friendly. (e.g. take out food is hardly ever packaged in eco friendly containers, etc)
So I was ranting to my friend, Anneliese over at @yourcorewellness about it and she offered to write a blog for me on 3 tips for low waste and health conscious travel with kids. AND Bonus- it’s budget friendly as well.
Let’s jump in!

It’s not always easy to be eco-friendly or health conscious while traveling. Seems like there is always something to buy on the go or for the sole purpose of the trip. It’s even harder with kids.
I have learned a few tricks after a few rounds of airplane travel with my kiddo.
- Freeze your food. I use the PackIt brand lunch bags which have ice packs built into the lining. The night before my trip I fill them with things like hard cheddar cheese, yogurt, guacamole, hummus. In the morning I add in the rest of our snacks that need to stay cold- pasta salad, turkey slices, chicken strips, salami, sliced veggies, apples. If you are lucky enough to have a mini fridge in your hotel or are staying in a house you can just wash all the containers and refill for day trips during your stay and for the trip home.
2. Freeze your water bottles too. Liquids don’t count as liquids when frozen! Thank you to my grade school science teacher for that nugget of life knowledge. We love the Pura Stainless Steel brand and Hydroflask bottles. Fill them with coconut water for an extra special treat. Take them out JUST before you leave the house for the airport and chug any melted liquid before you go through TSA just in case. I bring my travel coffee mug with me empty to the airport and fill up with hot water or tea at the coffee shop in the terminal to use as my plane beverage. I cringe at all the plastic cups used during a flight.
3. Reuse. I try to find containers I already have at home to refill instead of purchasing new travel sized containers of toiletries. One of my favorite repurposed containers are contact lens cases. They are the perfect size for a long weekend of
- face wash,
- moisturizer,
- lip balm,
- lipstick -how to on IGTV
- Mouthwash
- Toothpaste
Great tips, right? What are some of your eco conscious tips for traveling with little ones?
