I have been searching ALL over for a nontoxic safe diaper that serves as a pull and I literally could not find one anywhere until I stumbled upon eco pea!
And while I won’t pretend to be a potty training expert because we are just starting out this journey this week – I will share with you all the good information I learned via my interview with Briana James from Eco Pea. Grab a kombucha and read on!
PS – We are using this Elmo potty chart and kit to encourage Lizzie during potty time!
BYOK: Why bamboo diapers? What is wrong environmentally with regular diapers?
ECO PEA: Most diaper brands are made using chemical whiteners, lotions, toxic fragrances and plastics that take 500+ years to break down. This means that if your parents used disposables when you were a baby, all of the diapers you wore are still in a landfill today, totally intact! Bamboo fibre is naturally breathable, antibacterial, antimicrobial, and odor-resistant, so we don’t have to add chemical fragrances to hide smells or lotions to counteract diaper rash. Bamboo also starts to break down naturally after ~2-3 months, so by choosing diapers made with bamboo sourced in a safe and sustainable way, you can avoid unnecessary chemicals near your baby’s skin while being much kinder to the environment.
BYOK: What is wrong toxicity wise with regular diapers?
ECO PEA: This can be a long answer, but I’ll try to keep it concise 🙂 You will often find known toxins like chlorine, fragrances, lotions, dyes and phthalates in disposable diapers. During the bleaching process using chlorine, dioxins are emmitted which have a carcinigenic effect. Fragrances are often used to hide the smell of urine and poop, but since manufacturers don’t have to disclose what is in their “fragrance”, these are often chemical scents that can cause allergic and asthmatic reactions and even hormone and reproductive developmental effects. Lotions are similar in that you will likely never know what the ingredients are, and the lotion is what sits right next to baby’s skin in a disposable diaper. Lotions are commonly used to help limit diaper rash, though these can be the very irritants that cause it in the first place. The good news is, if you are using a breathable, antibacterial and odor-resistant material (like bamboo), we can avoid these things all together.
BYOK: Benefits of bamboo diapers and using Eco Pea Co.?
ECO PEA: Diapers made from bamboo are super soft so they feel almost luxurious on baby’s skin and bamboo is incredibly absorbent (about 60% more so than cotton!). Being naturally antibacterial and without any added chemicals or lotions, bamboo is a great option to avoid or help get rid of diaper rash too. Plus, bamboo regenerates itself and grows very quickly, which means we use no pesticides and very little water. Eco Pea Co. diapers are plain white, without any dyes or inks, and we like to think they go with everything 😉
BYOK: What makes Eco Pea Co. different from other brands?
ECO PEA:We are a family run company with 3 kids of our own. After our youngest started getting rashes and breakouts from our regular diaper brand, we started looking into what we were actually using, and realized that many big brands of diapers and wipes were (a) not always safe and (b) not typically made with the environment in mind, something that has always been important to us. So as a company, we can totally relate to any parent going through something similar, and as a brand, we offer an incredibly effective (and blowout tested) diaper, that feels great on the skin, is made with the environment in mind and is delivered right to your door!
BYOK: I love that you also make toddler pull ups! What are all the products in your line?
ECO PEA: We currently offer diapers (NB-Size 4) and 100% biodegradable bamboo wipes – we were excited to launch the diaper pants this year after many requests! You may be able to expect more thoughtful and eco-friendly baby products in the future 😉
