MEET KATE MCCABE OF SOLFUL HEALTH
Kate McCabe, founder of Solful Health, is the epitome of a well-rounded holistic individual. She is a nutrition expert, yoga teacher, has a psychology degree, runs a successful company and is a plant-based chef. HELLO BOOKED GOOGLE CALENDAR.
How did she diversify, yet remain so on point with her wellness journey?
“Truthfully, it was a bit planned! I decided long ago (like, when I was 14) that I wanted to become a psychologist. It was also around this age that I began practicing yoga as a means to cope with stress, anxiety, and depression….. And I knew very early on that I would one day become a yoga teacher, and combine the practice of yoga with traditional counseling to help people heal emotional imbalances holistically. The nutrition aspect came much later as you know. And in way of my cooking background, I am very blessed in that my mother is an absolutely incredible professional pastry chef and cook, and I was trained by her at an early age.”
Katie explains even further that per holistic lifestyle began on a very personal level as she always planned to be a psychologist as she was always fascinated by the work that supports mental emotional health.
“While in college, I found myself at an all-time low healthwise: I was overweight, totally stressed and unhappy, and dealing with a myriad of health issues. I had a very intimate understanding of what I could do to support myself on an emotional level, but truly no idea on how to heal physically. I was eventually diagnosed with a kidney disorder and adrenal fatigue, and from there just totally dove into holistic health practices and the study of nutrition. Long story made shorter, I was able to completely transform and elevate my physical and emotional health through food, and was left feeling so inspired by the experience that I dedicated my remaining two years of school to studying nutrition, holistic health, and the ways in which these practices affect our mental health.”
How did Solful Health come about?
The creation of Solful Health was a bit by accident. Katie was fresh out of college and working as a health coach at a counseling center. Although she loved the work she was doing, she felt as if there was a creative unfulfillment so she started an instagram and sharing photos about the food she was making, the yoga she was doing, and all the crazy wellness stuff she was experimenting with. She never really cared if her posts were “liked” but she just needed the outlet to create. BUT OF COURSE EVERYONE LOVED HER POSTS. And soon thereafter, she left her job to establish Solful Health the company and Journal.
This Journey Called Life
Despite all of Katie’s successful, she is still human and she still shares the same uncertainties we all face.
“There are certainly times when I feel imbalanced by it all, but I find that by focusing on the task at hand and getting incredibly present, I end the day feeling both productive and sane. Thinking “big picture” can feel way too overwhelming at times, so it’s important for me to take life day-by-day. And when I do feel a bit crazed from the work load (as we all do from time to time), I shift into a state of gratitude – reminding myself that I’m busy doing my dream work. Also, lists. So many lists.
Teaching yoga and writing. I truly can’t choose between the two, and I hope I never have to. Teaching fills my heart in a way I never thought possible, and the writing and recipe development part of my day is just so damn fun. It’s somewhat unconventional to do all these different things at once, and I have narrowed my scope of focus a lot this past year, but I honestly wouldn’t feel complete any other way.
ADVICE FOR A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE
How do we follow the Solful Health lifestyle? Katie says consistency is what matters most – it’s not what you do sometimes, but what you do most of the time, that determines your success.
“Because it’s straight up impossible to overhaul your diet/life/fitness regime overnight (at least for longer than a few days), choose just a single habit, practice, or food to start. Make it something simple that resonates with you, and commit to making it a daily practice. A single small health habit practiced every day will have a much more profound effect than a few scattered days of ultra clean eating.”
And though it’s almost cliche at this point, starting each day with a glass of warmed water and fresh lemon is a health habit she strongly recommends to those just beginning their journey. It’s incredibly simple, doesn’t feel restrictive in any way, and if put into practice daily will impart really beautiful heath shifts. This was one of the first health habits Katie picked up and she remains committed to still to this day.
She also has some good reads for those starting their wellness journey.
“The Happiness Diet and The Gut-Brain Connection were two game-changing books for me that I recommend to everyone, even if you don’t struggle with emotional imbalance. The first book I ever read on nutrition, where this whole journey of mine began, was Kimberly Snyder’s Beauty Detox Solution. Still today, her perspective on health, beauty, and nutrition is a huge influence in my work and life. Women, Food, and Desire provides a really beautiful perspective about why food feels so complicated for us as women, and is a book I enjoy revisiting. I also love Well Being Journal for monthly downloads of holistic health information and inspiration.”
ADVICE FOR #BOSSBABES
“Whatever your endeavor, be sure that you always make time to regularly reconnect with yourself. It’s incredibly easy to get distracted and wander down a path that isn’t meant for you, so being mindful that you stay true to your dreams and your unique vision will save you a lot of time and stress.
I also believe deeply that what is meant for us will never, ever miss us, and what isn’t meant for us will never work out. So when I feel directionless, I soften into this knowing and just allow things to work themselves out (as they always do).”
Now do you see why I just love Katie. She is such a gentle soul with such great wisdom. Be sure to check out her website www.solfulhealth.com and shoot her a message on instagram and let her know how much you loved her interview one here 🙂
